I love that Jalie patterns fit such a wide range of sizes - I can make myself a pair too, and I can make them for my daughter for years. My daughter, who struggles to find pants that fit her properly, wanted a pair of wide leg pants, and likes pants that tie, and Simone fit those criteria perfectly. These are size M with length P, based on her measurements, though I ended up hemming them more than I thought I would; they fit her well with a little room to grow.
I am not a novice, but also not super experienced, and there were multiple places in the pattern where I had to undo my work to fix something that wasn't spelled out clearly in the directions and/or pictures. While an experienced sewist would probably see these things ahead of time, it would be helpful for the rest of us (making the pattern more accessible to all) to add these specifically: 1. when sewing the pocket facing to the pants front, "stop at the notch" would have brought more attention to the tiny picture. 2. Before sewing the side seams "make sure ties are on the right side of fabric when pinning". 3. I wondered for a while exactly how much elastic was supposed to stick out when sewing it in place - the picture was unclear and the directions did not state. Perhaps it doesn't really matter. 4. Lastly, when topstitching the elastic (which I found easier to do before sewing the side seams - after step 4, rather than trying to work around the whole waistband in step 34), divide into quarters and pin to divide the fabric evenly before stretching the elastic while stitching.
This pair started out as a muslin from a 100% cotton retired bedsheet, but I ended up finishing them fully instead of just making a mock-up, since my daughter really liked the fun pattern.
For a woven fabric pattern, I wish the pattern included suggestion(s)/directions on at least one way to finish the seams, if desired. I added 1/8" in the seam allowance in order to "turn and stitch" rather than serge, but it did prove to complicate things, particularly for finishing the inseam - next time, I'll probably just serge, even though I don't think it looks as nice, nor is as comfortable.
Great pattern with easy to follow instructions
My granddaughter requested wide leg pants. She wanted some for drapey woven fabric. Simone was just the pattern we needed. It’s fast and easy, but still has some nice design elements. Another winner from Jalie!
These shorts are so comfortable and very flattering. I made them in a tencel-like fabric, in linen, and in lightweight cotton twill. The ties really add style, even though I also love the linen ones where I omitted the ties. I did add two inches to the length as I like my shorts a bit longer. Fantastic pattern!
I LOVE the shorts and the drafting. The instructions were clear and easy to comprehend. The only shortcoming is the lack of finishing on raw hems. An easy omission that you may need to rectify if you are used to having reminders on patterns from other companies.
I made a pair out of linen with my usual fit adjustment of lengthening the crotch by 1/2 inch and lengthening the shorts length. This is after doing some extensive research online on sewists who have made the shorts previously. The shorts were quite quick and easy to assemble and sew up. I had to do some last minute binding of my raw edges as I realised that the pattern did not mention about finishing off the edges and i was already 80% done with the shorts. Thankfully, I have not put on the waistband etc when i realised it. Nevertheless, I would still recommend the pattern for fit, drafting and assembly aside from the finishing of raw edges. The bow tie was a cute touch and despite the shorts having an elastic back, the shorts did not add bulk. Definitely a go to for more summer shorts - I might try one without the ties and waist loops in my next attempt.
