Description

Bomber jacket for stable knits or stretch woven with zipper at front, ribbing collar, cuffs and waistband. Pocket with single welt made of pocket fabric and forward shoulder seam.

Striped ribbing from l'Oiseau Fabrics

To get a perfect fit on the zipper, you will most probably have to shorten it (because our length increments are not 5 cm / 2'' like zippers are). If you cannot find zipper stops at your local store, you can easily find some online:

Charlie Bomber Vest
I made this as a vest for my niece for her fourth birthday. I made the size suggested for that age. This is a perfect blank slate garment for personalization. She’s into Batman at the moment and I appliqued a gold Batman emblem on the chest. It was a little nerve racking for me to decide how far down from the neckline to place it. It’s somewhere between 2-3” below the center front neckline. A smidge lower to clear the zipper pull would have been better.

My niece lives in the south and I thought a vest would be more versatile than a jacket. I decided on the width of the armhole bands by taking taking half the width of the waistband + two seam allowances.

A small gripe is that the pockets aren’t finished in the instructions (written or video) which isn’t crucial in a knit, but in a woven I’d line it. I made this as a test run for a Charlie bomber jacket I want to sew for myself and have no doubts that it will be a success when I sew it. The zipper went it without a hitch but next time I’ll end it so it stops 1/8 to 1/4” below the neckline seamline rather than right on it. It’s a little tight/stiff when zipped all the way up, but a four year old won’t notice that.

It’s a wonderful jacket that I have plans to sew many times as a casual vest and jacket and with dressy fabrics too. The sizing looks to be accurate in photos that I’ve seen of my niece wearing it.

Excellent pattern
I love this pattern! I have made at least 10!
I have made them is all sizes from size 2 to adult. I have made 3 for teenage boys and they were well received and worn regularly, I consider this high praise. And I have another requested by another teenage boy!
The pattern is fantastic in its elegance.
My favrouite part of the pattern is the pockets! I love how good these pockets look, how easy they are to make and how useful they are (things stay in them!). I have used these pockets on other items of clothing including Bathrobes (2567) and other hoodies.
The instructions are easy to follow and give a neat finish, especially at the collar/zip edge. All the pieces go together perfectly and easily.
I love how easy this jackt is to costomise. I have made varsity (with letter) style jacket, floral jackets, Slytherin jackets and I have a Ravenclaw on in progress :)

Great pattern
I was very pleased with the results. For me, it was very important to have the video to rely on. I watched it several times, not that it is all that difficult. I did forget a couple of finishing steps, and my serger hated the heavy sherpa material that I chose, so some of my interior seams are a bit ugly...but that is the fault of the fabric choice, not the pattern! Next time, I will use a lighter weight fabric, as recommended by Jalie..
