Perfect on trend pattern! I have made 3 so far. Love the style photo redo withe the same model!
I am really glad that Jalie published this fleece jacket pattern. I had been looking for a pattern like this for quite a while. Jalies seizing is perfect and the jacket fits nicely.
Some changes I made: Instead of a simple hem, I added an elastic draw cord and cord locks to the bottom hem.
I am already sewing a second SAM jacket. This time I will add zippers to the lower pockets.
Overall Sam is wonderful but a few flaws could break it. The top pocket isn’t large enough for most sell phones. Face it, that’s what it will be used for. The other 2 pockets are huge and great for hands but there will always be a nagging fear of items falling out without some sort of closure. The self facing fabric on these pockets is a huge mistake if you have thick, warm fleece; I bent 2 serger needles. The fit is a bit bigger than I expected. I enlarged the top pocket and put snaps on the lower pockets and will face with lining next time. The construction of the top pocket is fantastic and rings of good old Jalie ingenuity.
Thank you for sharing your detailed review! The chest pocket was indeed designed with small items in mind, while the inner pockets are there for larger items like phones. As you pointed out, thick fleece can make sewing the self-facing pockets challenging, we are sorry you broke needles going through all the layers and the piping. Though our instructions don’t specify this, using a thinner fabric or a less lofty fleece remnant for the pocket facing is a helpful tip to prevent needle breakage. Your insights will be valuable to others considering thicker fleece, thanks again for your feedback! Glad you enjoyed the pocket construction, it was fun coming with the technique :)
I like the jacket, however will tweak it the next time tonsuot.my needs. My major unhappiness came from the pattern/instructions. I am an experienced sewist (over 60 years' of sewing). I reread the instructions a number of times to accidentally discover the pattern pieces I looked for were repeats ie the back should be cut from the front, pocket lining from the pocket. Instead of assuming customers will know, simply state it in the instructions. It was extremely frustrating.
I have made this jacket pattern twice and love them! First one I made using Polar fleece. The only alteration I made was to shorten the sleeves by 1 1/4”. The second one I made using polartec soft shell from Discovery Fabrics in BC. It fits a little snugger since it did not have the required stretch but is still fine. I highly recommend this pattern!
